Palestine / Jordan (1937 - 1989)
Rabah Al-Sughayer was a multi-talented Palestinian artist that worked as a caricaturist, painter, photographer, graphic designer, and one of the founders of art criticism in the Arab world. His caricatures have appeared in local newspapers and across the Arab world, leaving a big imprint on the evolution of caricature art in Arab countries.
He was born in 1938 in the town of Fallujah, Palestine while under British mandate. Soon after, the Zionist conspiracy was revealed and the setback of 1948 occurred. His family returned to their hometown Al-Khalil, where Rabah completed his elementary and middle school studies and then earned a vocational high school diploma from “Qalandia Industrial School”.
In 1956, he was appointed a teacher of vocational training at Prince Mohammed School in Al-Khalil. Between 1957 and 1959, he studied the art of caricature through correspondence courses with the University of Cairo. He then traveled to Egypt and graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Cairo in 1964 with a receiving a diploma in interior design. Between 1965 and 1967, he worked in caricature drawing and artistic editing in the newspapers "Al-Manar" and "Al-Difa'a."
In 1967, the war broke out, and Israel occupied the West Bank and Gaza strip, this fact shocked the artist violently. He carried out a number of operations against the occupation forces, and wrote publications calling for an uprising. This drove the Israeli forces to pursue him on charges of resisting the occupation, thus forcing him to leave Palestine and settle in Amman.
He was hired as a professor at Amman College in the Journalism Department, and he had a regular column titled "The History of Caricature," in which he wrote many critical articles. He was also interested in children's literature and was one of the artistic editors of the "Wissam" magazine for children's literature belonging to the Ministry of Culture, and later worked on the creation of the "Samer" magazine for children.
He also worked at the Jordanian newspaper "Al-Rai" as a caricature artist until his passing in 1989. His artistic style was characterized by simplicity and directness, his messages were understood by various audiences. His caricature topics focused on national issues, the criticism of Arab regimes, and the American dominance in the Arab region, thus banning him from entering many Arab countries and publishing his art.
Rabah Al-Sughayer passed away in 1989 at the age of 52, leaving behind a great legacy of artistic works and authentic art criticism that still testifies to his pioneering role in that era of Arab world history.
He was honored posthumously with several awards and honors, including the Jordanian State Appreciation Award from King Hussein bin Talal of Jordan, and the Palestinian Jerusalem Medal from President Yasser Arafat, in addition to many other awards and recognitions.

رباح الصغيّر فنان فلسطيني شامل فهو رسام كاريكاتير، فنان تشكيلي، مصور فوتوغرافي، مصمم فني، وأحد أبرز مؤسسي النقد الفني في العالم العربي. انتشرت رسوماته الكاريكاتيرية في الصحافة المحلية وفي أرجاء الوطن العربي الكبير، فترك بصمة واضحة على مسيرة فن الكاريكاتير في البلاد العربية.
ولد عام 1938 في بلدة الفالوجة، في ذلك الوقت كانت فلسطين في قبضة الانتداب البريطاني، وسرعان ما انكشفت المؤامرة الصهيونية وحدثت نكبة 1948. حينها عادت عائلته إلى مسقط رأٍسها في مدينة الخليل، حيث أتمّ رباح هناك دراسته الابتدائية والمتوسطة، ثم حاز على شهادة الثانوية العامة المهنية من مدرسة قلنديا الصناعية.
عام 1956 عُيِّن مدرساً لمادة النشاط المهني، في مدرسة الأمير محمد في مدينة الخليل، وقرّر دراسة فن الكاريكاتير عن طريق المراسلة في الجامعة الأهلية في القاهرة، وذلك خلال الفترة من 1957 إلى 1959.ثم سنحت له الفرصة، فسافر إلى مصر وتخرّج من كلية الفنون في القاهرة عام 1964، حاصلاً على شهادة الدبلوم في هندسة الديكور، مما أضاف مجالاً فنياً جديداً إلى مواهبه. خلال الفترة الواقعة بين عامي 1965 و1967، عمل في رسم الكاريكاتير والتحرير الفني في جريدتي "المنار" و"الدفاع".
عند اندلاع حرب حزيران 1967، واحتلال إسرائيل للضفة الغربية في قطاع عزة، هزت هذه الأحداث الفنان وصدمته بشكل عنيف، فقام بعدد من العمليات النضالية ضد قوات الاحتلال، وكتب منشورات داعية للانتفاضة الشعبية، فلاحقته القوات الإسرائيلية بتهمة مقاومة الاحتلال، حينها اضطر لمغادرة فلسطين، ليستقرّ في مدينة عمان.
تم تعيينه مدرساً في كلية عمان في قسم الصحافة، وخصص عموداً ثابتاً بعنوان "تاريخ الكاريكاتير" وكتب العديد من المقالات النقدية الفنية. كما اهتم بأدب الأطفال، كان أحد المحررين الفنيين لمجلة "وسام" المخصصة لأدب الطفل التابعة لوزارة الثقافة، ثم عمل على إنشاء مجلة "سامر" للأطفال.
عمل في جريدة "الرأي" الأردنية حتى وفاته، رسّام كاريكاتير، ومستشاراً فنياً للجريدة. اتسم أسلوبه الفني بالبساطة والمباشرة، حيث يستطيع الجمهور بكافة شرائحه فهم رسالاته. أما مواضيعه الكاريكاتيرية فتميزت بالاهتمام بالقضايا الوطنية، والانتقاد اللاذع للأنظمة العربية والهيمنة الأمريكية على المنطقة العربية مما تسبب بمنعه من دخول العديد من الدول العربية ومنع نشر رسوماته الكاريكاتيرية.
توفي الفنان رباح الصغيّر في عام 1989 عن عمر يناهز 52 عاما تاركاً خلفه إرثاً كبيراً من الأعمال الفنية، والنقد الفني الأصيل الذي مازال شاهدًا على ريادته ودوره الفنيّ البارز في تلك الحقبة من تاريخ العالم العربي.
تم تكريمه بعد وفاته بالعديد من الأوسمة والجوائز ومنها جائزة الدولة التقديرية الأردنية من العاهل الأردني الملك الحسين بن طلال، ووسام القدس الفلسطيني من الرئيس ياسر عرفات بالإضافة لعدد من الجوائز والتكريمات.
