Every Egyptian is capable of understanding Mostafa Hussein’s popular cartoons, for they are well-known among ordinary citizens as they have spoken the language of the streets, reflecting its worries and issues for more than thirty years throughout Akhbar Al-Yawm magazine.
Hussein’s most popular character called “Fallah Kafar Al-Hanadwa” represents the Egyptian people who have been in conflict with the prime minister for more than 14 years. He is also the artist behind a multitude of other characters and cartoons from which we cite his most famous, “Al-Hob Houwa” that was published for twenty-seven years.
The artist’s satiric characters were invented with the help of co-worker, journalist Ahmad Ragab with whom he has formed for more than thirty years now a successful pair.
Together, they have captured the reality of the country, for their work mirrors the agony and the hopes of the people.
Hussein’s cartoons are deprived of exaggeration because he mainly focuses on his characters’ portraits that usually interact with one another using the language of the streets inspired by the daily life of Egyptians.
Moreover, Hussein’s drawing skills (especially when it comes to portraits) are relevant in his works; they are a palpable proof of the artist’s expertise in the field and his academic knowledge. In fact, Hussein developed his academic culture from the Faculty of Fine Arts/department of photography in 1959, and he has been working since for Akhbar Al-Yawm. He also participated in the creation of “Croan” magazine in 1964.
1985 was the year he received Ali and Mustafa Amin Award for the best Egyptian journalistic painter.
Despite of his success, Hussein is known to be objective and highly mature; he excels at putting on the table people’s problems and concerns.
In the words of late artist Hussein Bikar: “ Mustapha Hussein is capable of making out of his cartoons, works of art worthy of being shown in museums, for they unite artistic creativity along with a classy sense of humor.”
Hussein started his carrier at an early age working for magazines such as: Al-Risala Al-Jadida, Al-Mousawer and Hawaa’, while being a member of the “Egyptian Association for Caricature” and the editor in chief of “Caricature” magazine. In 2002, he was voted the president of the Egyptian fine artists’ league and obtained in July 2004 a national appreciation award.
In order to encourage young graphic designers, Hussein personally donates every year 5 000 Egyptian pounds as a prize to the winner of the best book cover contest, a competition made possible through the literature page of “Al-Akhbar” newspaper.
Alongside with depicting the issues encountered by Egyptians on a daily basis, Hussein has painted a number of Egyptian celebrities, publishing his works in Akhbar Al-Yawm and the Center of Critique and Creativity in Alexandria.
Finally, he obtained a national encouragement award for children’s cartoons and Suzan Moubarak Award for the best children’s book in 1990 and 1994 in addition to being the head of the International Jury in the children’s cinema festival in 2001. For all of the reasons above, Mustafa Hussein is considered an important pillar in the world of contemporary caricature in Egypt.
لا يكاد مصري واحد يحسن القراءة ولا يسمع أو يرى رسومات مصطفى حسين. وإن شخصياته الكاريكاتورية المتعددة تكاد تكون معروفة لدى المصريين العاديين، لأنها تحكي بلسان ابن الشارع المصري، وتحمل همومه وقضاياه، وهي تطل عبر "أخبار اليوم" منذ أكثر من ٣٠ عاما. ومن أشهر هذه الشخصيات: "فلاح كفر الهنادوة" الذي يمثل الشعب المصري الذي ناقش رئيس مجلس الوزراء طيلة ١٤ عاما. إضافة إلى شخصيات كاريكاتورية أخرى مثل: عبد الروتين، وقاسم السماوي، وحمودة القفل، وكمبورة، والحكيت، وعباس العرسة، ومطر الأخبار، وعبده العايق، والكاريكاتور الشهير "الحب هو" الذي نشر لمدة ٢٧ عاما، والطريف أن هذه الشخصيات الساخرة هي من إكتشافات مصطفى حسين بمعية زميله الصحافي أحمد رجب، والتي يصوّرانها، ويأخذونها من واقع الحياة اليومية المصرية. وباتت هذه الشخصيات تحكي آلام وآمال المصريين.
يتجنب مصطفى حسين المبالغة في رسوماته ويعتمد البورتريه المحايد، ولغة حوارية مأخوذة من الواقع الشعبي المصري ويعدّها معه أحيانا كثيرة زميله أحمد رجب، وهما يشكلان ثنائيا ناجحا في هذا المجال قرابة ثلاثة عقود مرّت. ولمصطفى خبرة طويلة في رسم البورتريه الكاريكاتوري. ورسم هذه الشخصيات تظهر للمتأمل أنها تمتلك أسس وقواعد الرسم واللون الأكاديمية، من حيث توزيع الظل والنور. ونعتقد أن السبب هو الثقافة الأكاديمية التي حصل عليها مصطفى حسين وهو الحاصل على بكالوريوس الفنون الجميلة من قسم التصوير في العام ١٩٥٩، وعمله في "أخبار اليوم" منذ ذلك التاريخ. واشترك في تأسيس مجلة "كروان" في العام ١٩٦٤، وحصل على جائزة علي ومصطفى أمين في العام ١٩٨٥ كأحسن رسام صحفي مصري.
واللافت في نقد مصطفى حسين أنه موضوعي، وهو يعرف كيف يطرح مشكلات وقضايا الناس، ويحمل فكرا ناضجا ومستنيرا، طبقا لآراء منتقديه ومحبّيه على السواء. وقال عنه الفنان الراحل حسين بيكار: مصطفى حسين أقدر من يجعل فن الكاريكاتور لوحات فنية توضع في المتاحف لأنها تجمع بين القدرة على الإبداع الفني، وعلى إثارة البسمة الحضارية الرشيقة لا السوقية.
ارتبط اسم مصطفى حسين بالكاريكاتور باكرا بدءا مع رسوماته المبكرة في المجلات: الرسالة الجديدة، والمصوّر، وحواء، وسمير، وهذا ما جعله ينسى فيما بعد: "الجمعية المصرية للكاريكاتور"، ويرأس تحرير مجلة "كاريكاتور" وقد انتخب بالإجماع نقيبا للفنانين التشكيليين المصريين منذ العام ٢٠٠٢، وقد حصل في تموز ٢٠٠٤ على جائزة الدولة التقديرية. وقد خصص جائزة سنوية قيمتها ٥ آلاف جنيه مصري لأحسن غلاف كتاب، يقدمها عن طريق صفحة الأدب في جريدة "الأخبار". وقد تبرّع بقيمتها تشجيعا للمصممين الشباب الذين يبرعون في مهنة تصميم وإخراج الكتب وأغلفتها المميزة.
إلى جانب معالجته للموضوعات اليومية التي يعيشها المصريون، رسم مصطفي حسين العديد من الشخصيات المصرية المعروفة ونجوم الصحافة والمشاهير، وتزيّن أعماله دار "أخبار اليوم" ومركز النقد والإبداع بالإسكندرية. وكان حصل على جائزة سوزان مبارك لأحسن كتاب أطفال عامي ١٩٩٠ و١٩٩٤. وعلى جائزة الدولة التشجيعية لرسوم الأطفال. وكان قد تولى رئاسة "هيئة التحكيم الدولية" في مهرجان سينما الأطفال في عام ٢٠٠١. ويعتبر مصطفي حسين الآن، محطة مهمة في عالم الكاريكاتور المصري المعاصر.
