Egypt - 1941
Gomaa Farhat, an Egyptian political and comic cartoonist, was born in 1941 in Cairo, Egypt. He obtained a Bachelor’s Degree from the College of Commerce in Al-Azhar University, in 1964.
His passion for drawing started in the English class, which he did not like, as he began drawing his teacher in different positions, such as sitting or standing, silent or speaking. As soon as his teacher knew about it and viewed his drawings, and instead of punishing him, he introduced Gomaa to the distinguished cartoon Artist Bahjat Othman at the “Rose El-Youssef” magazine. Farhat’s career began, in 1964, and started to get remarkably known, in the 80’s, while moving around the press institutions, from “Rose El-Youssef” to “Al-Ahram”, as well as the partisan and independent newspapers such as “Al-Wafed”, “Al-Ahaly” and “Sawt Al-Oumma”.
His work has been published through his agent in more than 120 American newspapers and magazines and multiple European and Asian magazines and newspapers, such as the American “Herald Tribune” and many other international publications.
He also illustrated for the Emirati Children’s magazine “Majed”
His own program was shown on Nile Cultural Channel under the title “Ma’ Gomaa Kol Gomaa”, which showed, explained and analyized animations from all over the world.
Gomaa Farhat became a member of the Board of Directors of the Egyptian Caricature Union, in 1984.
Gomaa Farhat won the “Mostafa Amin” and “Ali Amin” Award for Best Egyptian Cartoonist in 1989, and won the Journalist Syndicate Award twice, in 1986 and 1989.
He participated in many different International and local exhibitions. He is considered as one of the best Caricature Artists in Egypt and the Arab world, as through his satirical drawings, he succeeded in pointing to many important social issues.
Gomaa Farhat is considered one of the most prominent supporters for this profession throughout his presidency of the Egyptian Caricature Association, until the end of his life. Despite his illness and movement difficulties, he was keen to attend exhibitions.
A drawing competition of his portrait was proposed before his death, but he was in a very difficult health stage, and the proposal was postponed and unfortunatily passed away in 2021 at the age of 80 before it was implemented.

ولد فيز القاهرة عام 1941 وحصل عام 1964على شهادة البكالوريوس في التجارة من جامعة الزهر.
بداياته مع الرسم كانت أثناء حضوره صف الإنكليزية التي لم يكن يحبها، وبدأ برسم أستاذه واقفاً أو جالساً، صامتاً أو يتكلم مع التلاميذ ، وحدث أن تسرب الموضوع إلى الأستاذ، فإطلع على الرسومات، وبدل أن يعاقبه أخذه بيده إلى مجلة «روزاليوسف»، وقدمه للرسام المميز بهجت عثمان، ومن هنا إنطلقت مسيرة فرحات عام 1964 وصعدت نجوميته بشكل لافت منذ بداية الثمانينات مع تنقله بين المؤسسات الصحافية من (روز اليوسف) لـ(الأهرام) وكذلك محطات الصحف الحزبية والمستقلة مثل (الوفد) و(الأهالي) و(صوت الأمة).
كرّس فرحات حياته للكاريكاتير ونُشرت أعماله عبر وكيله في نيويورك في أكثر من 120 صحيفة ومجلة أميركية، منها صحيفة «هيراليد تريبيون» بالإضافة إلى صحف ومجلات أوروبية وأسيوية.
بالإضافةإلى ذلك نُشرت رسوماته في المجلة الإماراتية «ماجد» المخصصة للأطفال.
في التلفزيون قدم فرحات برنامجه «مع جمعة كل جمعة» عبر قناة النيل الثقافية، وعرض فيه رسوما متحركة من كل أنحاء العالم مع تقديم شرح وتحليل لها .
عام 1984 أصبح جمعة فرحات عضواً في مجلس إدارة إتحاد الكاريكاتير المصري .
حاز فرحات على جائزة نقابة الصحفيين في عامي 1986 و 1989 .
نال جائزة مصطفى أمين وعلي أمين كأفضل رسام كاركاتير مصري لعام 1989.
شارك في العديد من المعارض الجماعية سواء في مصر أو في العالم، و يُعّد أحد أبرز فناني الكاريكاتير في مصر والوطن العربي، إذ نجح برسوماته الساخرة في تناول الكثير من القضايا الإجتماعية المهمة.
يُعتبر جمعة فرحات من أبرز من دعموا تلك المهنة طيلة فترة رئاسته للجمعية المصرية للكاريكاتير حتى آخر حياته، إذ كان يحرص رغم مرضه وصعوبة حركته في الفترة الأخيرة، على حضور المعارض.
وقبل رحيله دار حديث معه حول تخصيص مسابقة لرسم بورتريهات عنه، ولقي هذا الإقتراح صدى لديه، لكنه كان في مرحلة صحية صعبة فطلب من المقترحين تأجيل الفكرة إلا أن الوقت لم يسمح بتحقيقها بسبب رحيل المبدع الكبير الذي توفي عام 2021 عن عمر ناهز الثمانين عاماً .
