Lebanon

Habib Haddad is an experienced Arab cartoonist. Always up-to-date, his cartoons usually summarize current events with great vivacity. He draws freely but rarely uses words or sentences and openly criticizes certain policies. However, he refuses to mock for merely the fun of it and dreams just like every Arab of freedom.

Haddad was born in Lebanon in 1940 and was during his childhood, a passionate reader and constant follower of the Arab press and its ideas that soon took over his mind and soul and shaped his perspective.
Moreover, he dreamed of working in the press and started drawing in the early seventies for “Al Nida’” and “Al-Akhbar” two Lebanese newspapers.
In 1975, he was forced to leave Lebanon due to the civil war and immigrate to France where he pursued his artistic carrier as a silent satiric caricature artist.
Haddad took his first steps on the international scene while working in France for newspapers such as “Al-moustakbal” and “Al-Mouharer” before permanently settling down with “Al-Hayat”, a newspaper issued in London for which he still works nowadays.

Habib Haddad will certainly not be forgotten, for he has established a unique and innovative drawing style that has so far brought him 17 local and international awards such as: Arab Journalism Award for Comics (Dubai 2002), St-Just-le-Martel award 2009 ( Limoges, France) . In 2008, he was selected to be part of the jury for the “World press cartoon” competition that took place in Portugal.

To document his work, Haddad has released two books: his first was “Al-Ahdath fi Al-Caricature” (published in 1979) which included cartoons he had drawn for “Al-Mostakbal” newspaper in Paris. His second and most successful book “Haddad’s cartoon” was released in 1998 and included the cartoons published in “Al-Hayat” along with others he had drawn for personal pleasure.
He considers his books to be important achievements, for events and politicians may fade away but his cartoons remain a form of historical palpable proof.
Haddad strongly rejects any sort of injustice and focuses on the Palestinian cause that he considers forgotten and neglected. He expresses his constant concern about the situation in the Middle East, especially in Lebanon and Iraq.
In addition to politics, Haddad tackles many international issues such as pollution and greed of multinational corporations but avoids religious topics and refuses to portray political leaders in a satiric way. Even though his cartoons are exempt of words, they truly send the messages he wants delivered.
Nowadays, Haddad considers that the art of caricature in the Arab world is acceptable; assuring that the censorship system exists even in European countries. On a personal scale, he has chosen to work with self-censorship.
