Saudi Arabia

Women's movements for women's rights are fought all over the world; they fight for equality in politics, equal pay and equal access to education and jobs. Saudi cartoonist Manal Mohammed turned these topics into a source of her satirical caricature, trying to balance (or at least try) between women's issues and humor. She deals with it in a new way to break the anti-female stereotypes, whether in the community or in the field of art itself.

Based on her talent in drawing, Manal Mohammed gained the skill of cartooning through self-study, and sought to break the rule of "male caricature" at the Arab and Saudi levels, and this was achieved in 2004 when she became the first Saudi cartoonist published in the official newspapers after participating in the Magazine within the Saudi newspaper Al Jazeera.

Manal Mohammed was born in Saudi Arabia and lives in Qassim. She works as a cartoonist in the Saudi newspaper Al-Jazeera in addition to working as a certified trainer from the General Organization for Technical and Vocational Training and being a professional trainer from the Center for Accelerated Education in America.

She worked in several magazines and newspapers, including Al-Marasam and Okaz, where she participated in more than 100 drawings before moving to Al-Watan newspaper in 2010, where she was commissioned to prepare drawings for more than half a year before moving later in the same year to Al-Jazeera newspaperShe started with the first temporary experience, which is to move the daily caricature on the Arab level through Al-Jazeera newspaper itself «Al-Jazeera Plus».

Most of her work is focused on women's issues in society, and most of her main characters are women. She chooses simple but profound dialogues in her criticism. She draws women without a veil, to show people that behind the veil there is a real person, and images of them in their homes to practice their ordinary hobbies, working to show the active role of women in work as a teacher, doctor or employee - sometimes conflicting with the image of her husband that asks her for a wage.

Manal Mohammed participated in many exhibitions, including: the first exhibition of cartoonists and illustrators in the exhibition Muftah in 2010, in the comedy exhibition in 2010, and the second edition of Qassim Artists in 2011. She also held a personal exhibition at Prince Salman Social Center in Riyadh in 2012. Manal Mohammed won the Saudi Professional Award - third place - in its first session in 2011.
